Transition Zones

Transition zones are spaces that help ease us through a change - from outside to inside or from public rooms to private rooms within the house. This can be a corridor or entry with a convienintly placed "drop-off zone"; a mud room, which can help with the activities and storage needs of arriving indoors or getting ready to go out; or a covered front porch at the door, creating a semi-public place to meet and greet visitors.

Well designed transition spaces help us both physically -by planning for places to get dry, store outerware and bags, drop off mail, and charge phones; and mentally -by creating layers of public and private space to pass through, for example: walkway, covered porch, entry with closet, then living space. Passing through this entry sequence allows time and space to "arrive".
